About the Travel Art series

I began this series while on a cross-country trip with an artist friend. We drove through the Northwest on down, drew and took picture, camped in parks, and stayed in towns that hadn’t changed much in decades. The unpretentious architecture with its utilitarian shapes inspired me to hold onto this uniquely American experience somehow by getting it on paper. I began sketching buildings and nature, speeding up my drawing process by replacing complex detail with simple shape. In my studio, I scaled up the drawings and transferred to board. Grid like patterns and echoing details emerged as I worked. Sometimes they entered as reflections on a surface, a background, or as a staccato like element repeated. I see these visual motifs like notes that would make music from another time, something that would sound both fleeting and familiar.

About Me

My photo
Leila Noorani
I was born in England, grew up in California and spent most of my adult life in San Francisco. In the 1990s I earned an MFA from University of Michigan in Printmaking, worked as a college art teacher, and then a computer game artist. In the early part of this decade I grew restless and moved around the east coast trying out cities the way some people try on new shoes. I discovered that there are simpler ways to change one’s scenery than move someplace new, and moved once again back to SF where I live. I now try to get out of the city whenever I can to travel and explore.
